Hard drive recovery on Seagate ST1000DM003

I have a hard drive hit by some sort of a surge when I was away on holiday. The reason I know this is that my security camera feed stopped on a locked up Picture at the same time. Also my VT recorder also failed. These other problems are now resolved sucessfully leaving only the hard drive to fix.
The drive is a Seagate Barracuda 1000GB 3.5 inch SATA model No ST1000DM003.
I Did not know of the problem until I returned from holiday and started to use the drive. At first the drive behaved normally. I noticed a problem watching a film I had previously watched without a problem. The film stopped part way through. On re starting the film it happened again. I then tried to copy data from the drive to another external Hard drive. It became slower and slower at transferring data. It then stopped and now does nothing. No sound, no sign of life at all. Only folders were transferred before it stopped but the folders did not contain any data.
The drive is a data only drive. My system drive is seperate and is not affected. I had made a backup of the data drive but made a mistake in the selection of the drive designation and ended up with two backups of the system drive instead of one of each. Lesson learned.
The data drive contains quite a lot of large film files and also several thousands of photographs as well as general data like letters, spreadsheets ectcerera. The most important of these are the photographs.
I am hoping you will be able to help me recover as much of the contents of the drive as possible.
