Recovering Files

The retrieval of files and data from hard drives is known as data recovery and in the UK there is a blog called Recover Deleted Data which has many different examples of hard drive failures and recommendation about what you can do to get your files back. Here are three examples along with advice.

Hard drive is broken

I’ve got a hard drive from my desktop which I took out before I scrapped the rest of the computer about 6 Years ago. I haven’t got a desktop any longer, only a laptop. I recently bought a 3.5” hard disk external enclosure to fit the hard drive into, which I can then connect to my laptop. But I fear the hard drive is broken or faulty, as nothing shows up when I connect it via the external hard disk enclosure. The hard drive was working 6 Years ago when I took it out. I cannot remember wether Windows was installed on this hard drive or I just used it for data storage.
Can you help me getting it to work? Or at least take out all the data that’s on it?

Advice: As long as you’ve got the PATA or SATA interface right, once you plug the power cable in, the hard drive should burst into life. If it doesn’t then there could be any number of faults with the hard drive.

Cracked Micro SD card

I’m hoping you can help, or tell me if you might be able to help with the following. My partner had a micro SD card in an adapter, plugged in to the side of her laptop…which she dropped. The micro SD card has cracked in half, around the middle of the card. Is this something which could be fixed? She has multiple work photos which she was in the process of backing up and is having a bit of a panic.
I’m based in Glasgow, so could pop along tomorrow (Tuesday) if this is something you can help with.

Advice: The data on a micro sd card is held on a single wafer thin chip. If the chip is cracked, broken in two or otherwise damaged the data on it will not be recoverable. I know that Data Clinic have a file recovery office in Glasgow so you could always take the device in for a second opinion, but from what you tell me there is no chance of recovery.

Bad sectors

The external HD is rarely being registered by my Mac laptop and on the odd occasion it is, it won’t load any files. A pop up appears saying that I can access my files but not save or replace them – however I can not access them.

Advice: This is typical of bad sectors – parts of your drive becoming unreadable or very slow to access. If your data is valuable, turn your drive off and get it into a decent data recovery company.

Installed Linux over Mac Files

linux logoI stupidly installed linux over the top of my mac. this wiped everything, then when I re-installed mac osx nothing was there. I did send it off to Rapid Data recovery and they were not able to recover anything from the HD. Would you be able to do anything. I did speak to a friend who works in data and they said that there still could be a way.
This is what happened.
– Linux installed which wiped HD and old Mac OSX tables.
– re-installed new mac OSX – nothing there.
– Disk image taken of HD.
So I have a disk image of the HD at that state. As I said Rapid Data already looks at it and said they could not help, I have also run recovery software with no luck.

I have a macbook air 2013 where the ssd is nonresponsive from boot. the macbook doesnt recognise the hard drive but a recovery of documents is required. also will require an eta of recovery (if possible) as i am facing an important deadline. also have an old magnetic hd (LA Lacie Porsche) in which will require recovery of files (not urgent). It’s running a version of Linux and I’m in Salford.

I found an old Seagate drive (model ST1181677LCV). As it has an ultra-wide, 80 pin SCSI connection I am unable to connect to it – and so don’t know its format – though suspect Mac.
My guess is that it may have info from the mid 1990s on it. I am not aware of there being any ‘valuable’ data on it, but would double check if it was not going to cost too much.
Are you able to read this drive? – it’s running and old version of Linux and has some Mac data on it too. It’s these files that I want to recover. I’m in Huddersfield and work in Salford.

I bought a toshiba external hard drive a while ago and stupidly converted the format from Linux PC to Mac compatible and afterwards it wouldn’t work and slowly went down hill from there. Im really scared that all the data has been erased and think theres a slim chance of getting it back. Could you give me an idea of if this is possible to repair/at least get the data from it and how much this would cost? Has 18 years worth of pictures on it!

Dropped hard drives in Stockport

I have a hard drive that was dropped on the floor a few days ago. I can still access files but transfer speeds are extremely slow (in the kb/s range). Ppt files regularly crash when opening. When saving, files also tend to crash. When I place my hand on the drive as it is spinning, it feels like there is a faint ticking, indicating a mechanical problem in reading files. It is essential that I recover as much data as possible (about 70gb in a 1tb Hard drive) as I am a new teacher and foolishly have not made a back up.

A friend has a Seagate 1TB hard drive that I dropped and has now stopped working. I really need the data on the hard drive as I use it to archive performances of my band. I’m wondering how much would it cost to be repaired? And where exactly are the Data Clinic hard drive recovery stores around Stockport?.

a map of stockport

Hard drive now removed (replaced with new) from 14 year old Toshiba laptop.
Hard drive physically will not rotate and seems totally broken. I need one file from it only, a draft of my memoirs (about 75,000 words). I live close to to Bredbury and Hazel Grove area of Stockport and can call in if you wish to recover my data.

The Destop HDD isn’t able to launch Windows (10) and using the Windows recovery tool shows the main partition as empty, being a WD Blue 2.5″ 640Gb capacity. I’ve connected the HDD to an external USB3 unit but I can’t access the data.

I urgently need Data Clinic’s help in recovering the files from a Western Digital My Passport Ultra external drive. Recently it started to taking a long time to show on a 2017 Macbook Pro after a fall onto the floor. We have an older Windows machine, running Windows 7 and the drive would show up, but transferring anything in the last few hours has seen frequent I/O errors appearing. Now it is struggling to even show the folders on the drive.

Data recovery for Lightroom user

Here’s an interesting data recovery enquiry I had from a professional photographer based in Wigan. I passed this enquiry onto the people at http://data-recovery-tips.co.uk/ who were able to get the data back.

Wigan

I have a 1 TB Transcend Storejet external HD no more than 4 months old. I was using it yesterday to run my lightroom catalogue whilst editing photos on my Macbook Pro and a strange error message came up (loads of commas and random letters) and Lightroom crashed and my Hardrive kind of froze (it wouldn’t eject but the symbol was still on my desktop). Ive tried plugging the hard rive into two different mac book pros, my iMac and changed cables aden the problem doesn’t change — it isn’t recognised, there is no sign of it at all. It has life as the blue power light is on on the hard rive but it is a continue light rather than flickering slightly like usual. Would like to try and recover the stuff on there and if possible get it working again.

Another one of my devices also needs sorting out: My HP Pavilion 15-b135ea Sleekbook had coffee spilled onto it, I then dried it out. The laptop then worked briefly, but now when I power it on it displays:
Boot Device Not Found
Please install an operating system on your hard disk.
Hard disk (3F0)
I pressed F2 for system diagnostics and ran a memory test, which was passed. I then ran a quick hard drive check which said:
SMART Check : Not installed
Short DST : Not installed
Then I ran an extensive hard drive check:
SMART Check : Not installed
Long DST : Not installed

This is the machine that I run Lightroom from, so not only do I need my data recovering from the Transcend hard drive I also need the laptop sorting out – do you think you can recover the data and get the laptop working again? I am in Wigan, Lancashire and can call in to see you if required.

Damaged unrecognised drives

I live in York and have a 1TB samsung M3 external hard drive which is now no longer recognised on windows 8/10 machines and samsung have indicated they will not be releasing new drivers to make this possible. I would like the data transferred to a new external HD. I am able to travel to Gelderd Road in Leeds if it’s any help

YorkMy Freecom 500GB external drive has got damaged – the mini USB port has become detached and I can feel the end of the unit is no longer solid. Not sure how it happened, as it is always stored in a pocket within my laptop case, but these things happen.
Is it likely the data on it can be saved?
And if so, at what kind of cost.

I have a problem with my hard drive on my MacBook Pro. It can not start-up, I did try to use command option p r but no success, try the safe mode but no success, try command r option but no success. This is urgent because I am at Leeds university.

HDD 500MB DAMAGE AFTER FALL ( itry to fix it with chkdsk – my laptop ist to slow for that) one partition full of photos and documents folder on another partition is important for me. what can be the price of your service and can you collect my device from my Leeds home?, or my work in York

Iomega external 360GB HDD – inside it’s a Seagate Barracuda 7200 I think. When we power it up the light blinks on and off and it doesn’t register on the PC. Having taken the casing off I couldn’t see an obvious loose connection. But I only got as far as taking the main outer casing off. Haven’t yet plugged it into a new drive mount etc.

External disk drive not detected by PC. Makes clicking noise when connected then stops, probable mechanical problem.

I have a Western Digital My Passport Ultra 3TB in York that fails to function for quite some time already. The light on the hard disk does not blink and is not found as an external hard disk when connected to my laptop. I have tried connecting it to a iOS and windows 10, but still not working. However, if I tried to hold the usb cable firmly over the hard disk, I can see light on the hard disk blinking, but it is still not connected to my laptop.

I’m at work in Leeds and when I plug in my WD My Passport to my laptop it makes five beeping sounds with the light flashing in time and then the light stays on but when I try to locate the drive it isn’t registering on my laptop.

iPhone help required

I dropped my phone and it died. First I thought it was the battery, but when I checked to a repairer, they said that the phone is “dead,” and that there’s nothing they can do about it. I just need to back it up and restore the data to a new phone. The guy explained that it has something to do with the “board” which i assume is the motherboard or the logic board. Also, he tried to connect the phone to itunes and it says that the phone is in recovery mode.

iPhone helpI had an old iPhone that stopped working around December last year as my contract ran out anyway I upgraded to a new one, I recently tried to use this phone again to get photos off of it and updated it to the iOS it needed but after I had done that I found a lot of my photos were missing and couldn’t be found on iCloud anymore, I’ve asked around a bit and been told that it’s likely I’ll never get them back as the update would have overwritten the data, these pictures are really important to me as a lot of them are of family and was wondering if you think there’s a solution to this and maybe I could drop the phone off at some point if you think the pictures are salvageable.

I took my iPhone 6S to Apple in London as it doesn’t power on and they recommended me contacting a data recovery company to retrieve the data stored in the phone. They said the problem was most likely the battery needed replacing. Could you help me recover my data?

I have a water damaged iPhone se that was not responsive so I sent it to another data recovery company. I have just been told they are unable to retrieve the data. All I am after is my photos. I am desperate

I have an iPhone 6s plus stuck in recovery mode from a failed attempt to downgrade from the ios11 beta to iOS 10.3.3. I am looking at options to recover some photos taken in the last 2-3 months before I restore.

Hard drive / phone troubleshooting

I have a laptop, which has died and an external drive with a damaged disc and would like to recover the data off both (reviving the laptop if possible?).

I have a WD My Passport that is not registering when I plug into my or other laptops. It appears to have a slightly crack in the casing, which I think happened when it was in a drawer.

I’d like to enquire about some data recovery services please.
I have a 500GB WD Passport external USB drive which as of yesterday evening stopped being able to be accessed. It actually only has about 20GB of data on it When connected the blue light comes on (steady state), the drive starts up but after a few seconds it stops and the light begins to flash and there is no recognition of the drive from my pc. I’ve tried changing the cable, I’ve tried getting access from various pc’s and a MacBook without any joy.

128Gb SSD laptop hard drive failure

640GB internal SATA laptop drive failed. Drive makes initial attempt to power up but a clicking sound is audible and is not detected when using an USB SATA adapter on another laptop.

iPhone 7 is completely dead, will not power on at all after being dropped on a stone floor. Replacement battery and charging dock hasn’t made a difference. I’m not bothered about being able to use the phone again but the data (photos and videos) stored on there are priceless. I’m based in Leeds, please advise

iPhone is pretty broke, screen totally broke/cracked, front screen is also lifted off, won’t charge, won’t turn on.
Would like to retrieve data from phone if possible?

I have a samsung galaxy A3 that has been dropped, it wont turn on and the screen is blank . I have connected it to a computer but it does not recognise the phone. I would like the all photographs and contact numbers retrieved if possible. The phone is old so i am not bothered if the phone is no good after.

Iphone6 – When I turned it on it goes into a white screen with the apple logo and after 1 minute it will switch off. Seems there is a problem with the motherboard. I will like to recover the information.

Of Western Digital Problems

We’ve been having a lot of enquiries about Western Digital hard drives lately – we asked hard drive experts Data Clinic to take a look.

WDC Western Digital logo

I have an old Western Digital external drive that sounds like it spins up, with a blinking light, but is not recognised by my Macbook. I don’t believe it was dropped but I lost the power supply to it when I was burgled so cannot be sure. I bought it in 2009/2010 and it lived a relatively pampered life until the burglary in 2011. It has a lot of sentimental files on it so I’m hoping they can be recovered.
How much do you estimate it would be to save my poor black brick?

I’m not sure is the hard drive type marked correctly. I have very big problem with my WD MyBook Live 3Tb. Few days ago it stopped connect with network (it works with router only as cloud). I took it out of the case and I tried to connect disc by sata/usb adapter, but it doesn’t work. Now when I trying to switch onthe disk I see the red light only (I checked in manual and it means:
– disk SMART failure
Data Volume does not exist
System Volume does not exist
System thermal shutdown
– Unsupported drive detected)
I understand my disc died, but I would like to find out is any chance to data recovery and what is the cost?

I have a QNAP RAID array comprising 5 HDDs (QNAP model and HDD spec unknown at this point as I am not with the NAS now). The red status light is flashing and one of the HDDs has no green light above it. Data is still accessible. I would like to replace the HDd and rebuild the RAID but am worried about losing data.

I am facing issues with my Toshiba Satellite L50B laptop, when turning it on, it requires to fill in a number of setting info including date, time, country of residence etc. I believe its a WD Western Digital dirve and after filling this info it restarts requiring again the same info. Is this something that you deal with, if yes what is the price and when can I pop in to your office?

Its a Integral V Series 240 GB SATA III Solid State Drive, 2.5 Inch drive, with Windows 10 OS. I’ve been running it fairly continuously for approx 5 months, with some restarts for OS updates, but with little downtime. I’ve never had any issues with the drive at all until the other day when I powered down the OS to move the computer. It failed to turn on afterwards, and the motherboard failed to detect the drive at all. I tried another drive on the same SATA data and power cables, which was detected successfully. I tried the other SATA data connections and another power cable and the Integral drive is still not detected.
I know you need to see the SSD before you can tell me anything specific, but can you give me a likely cost range so I can figure out if its worth me recovering the data to something like a Western Digital hard drive?

Seagate HDD Not Showing Up

I have a 4TB external hard drive. I have removed the casing and the chip, and plugged a SATA to USB connector into it. The hard disk starts for about 10 seconds, I can hear a repetitive pattern involving a couple of clicks. It’s repetitive so I presume it’s attempting to do something but something mechanical is stopping it from going any further; then when the machine realises it’s not getting anyway, it powers off. My Mac detects a device, but I suspect this is the boot drive on the HD as the volume is only 4gb, and it’s not initialized. There’s about 1TB of data stored on it – just photos. We need them recovering please, could you please provide a quote, and whether I would need to provide an empty hard drive for the data to be recovered onto?
Other than using Disk Utility on Mac, I have also tried to access the drive through Ubuntu, and DiskWarrior. Neither work. The hard drive does not spin, other than for the initial 10 or 15 seconds or so.
The make of the hard disk is Seagate: Backup Plus (4TB) – it’s a 2.5″ SATA and is just not showing up.
I have taken the case enclosing off it already.

seagate hdd

When I connect my hard drive to my mac laptop the blue light flashes continuously and you can hear it making a sound however, the laptop no longer recognises it. I have plugged in into another laptop and a desktop and the same thing happens. I also tried restarting my laptop etc.
It did drop out from my mac desktop and has been like this since. Desperate to recover all data on this hard drive. Could I have a little more info on your pricing and what is involved.

I have a small Seagate external hard drive. The computer recognises powers up the hard drive but is unable to see the patchway or read files. The drive keep making the same clicking noise.

4Tb Seagate:
The message came up: ‘The disk structured is corrupted and unreadable’.
I have run a chkdsk and a recovery programme. The files are there but I can’t access them.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated

Hard Drive Recovery at Risc

Here are the Risc Group we’ve seen several hard drives that have faults that have come into us for a data recovery:
I have taken my WD external hard drive to a local shop, as it was . After testing the device, I was told that it is completely dead. I have import items on the Buffalo external hard drive that I need.
Please let me know if this can be fixed?
I note that you are also based in Haringey

windows vistaSeagate Barracuda 7200.9 400GB hard drive – running Windows Vista, fails to start – IT consultant relative attempted to retrieve data but concludes that there is a physical problem with hard disc.I would like to recover Documents, photos and possibly outlook files.
also have a freecom external hard drive (model SSLBBB) which no longer works – would like to recover photos from it

On Saturday evening I used my 1tb WD My Passport and it worked perfectly fine. Safely ejected it.
Sunday morning I plugged it in again. Was not recognised on my laptop. Was not recognised on my friends’ laptops.
Monday was recognised on a PC. I tried to copy the files. After a while, it stopped responding and it is not recognised again.
I have my 5 years portfolio there, 800GB.
What can I do?

Dropped harddrive and now it cannot be recognised. Also made clicking noise when I plugged it in. Contain 700 GB of photos as well as files important to my PhD.

I have an encrypted hard drive of which has been extracted from a MacBook Pro 2012 model. I hope to be able to extract all files from the hard drive if possible. Is this something you can help with? I am based in the Scottish Borders. Not sure if its best to drop in to your Glasgow Office or send by post? Of course, this is providing you can help recovery the data.

Can images that have been deleted from iPhone 6s Plus (including from ‘deleted items’) and not backed up to iCloud be retrieved?

I have data in a HP-DDS-3 that needs to be converted into a DVD. Please can you let me know price and timescales.
