Recovering Files

The retrieval of files and data from hard drives is known as data recovery and in the UK there is a blog called Recover Deleted Data which has many different examples of hard drive failures and recommendation about what you can do to get your files back. Here are three examples along with advice.

Hard drive is broken

I’ve got a hard drive from my desktop which I took out before I scrapped the rest of the computer about 6 Years ago. I haven’t got a desktop any longer, only a laptop. I recently bought a 3.5” hard disk external enclosure to fit the hard drive into, which I can then connect to my laptop. But I fear the hard drive is broken or faulty, as nothing shows up when I connect it via the external hard disk enclosure. The hard drive was working 6 Years ago when I took it out. I cannot remember wether Windows was installed on this hard drive or I just used it for data storage.
Can you help me getting it to work? Or at least take out all the data that’s on it?

Advice: As long as you’ve got the PATA or SATA interface right, once you plug the power cable in, the hard drive should burst into life. If it doesn’t then there could be any number of faults with the hard drive.

Cracked Micro SD card

I’m hoping you can help, or tell me if you might be able to help with the following. My partner had a micro SD card in an adapter, plugged in to the side of her laptop…which she dropped. The micro SD card has cracked in half, around the middle of the card. Is this something which could be fixed? She has multiple work photos which she was in the process of backing up and is having a bit of a panic.
I’m based in Glasgow, so could pop along tomorrow (Tuesday) if this is something you can help with.

Advice: The data on a micro sd card is held on a single wafer thin chip. If the chip is cracked, broken in two or otherwise damaged the data on it will not be recoverable. I know that Data Clinic have a file recovery office in Glasgow so you could always take the device in for a second opinion, but from what you tell me there is no chance of recovery.

Bad sectors

The external HD is rarely being registered by my Mac laptop and on the odd occasion it is, it won’t load any files. A pop up appears saying that I can access my files but not save or replace them – however I can not access them.

Advice: This is typical of bad sectors – parts of your drive becoming unreadable or very slow to access. If your data is valuable, turn your drive off and get it into a decent data recovery company.

Phones and recovering data

Here we have some examples of requests for data recovery from damaged phones, courtesy of http://phone-recovery.pen.io/.

I have a liquid damaged LG X Screen. The phone will not turn on. The damage happened at approx 3pm on Saturday 15/07/17 when the phone dropped into a portaloo. It was retrieved within 5-10 minutes. I left the device into my local repair shop at approx 5pm the same day (as soon as I got home). They have been in contact today to say the device cannot be repaired. I have a lot of valuable photos stored on the phone’s internal memory that I am desperate to recover. What are the chances of these photos being retrieved?

IPhone 6 dropped in water. Tried to turn off immediately before putting in rice. Accidentally reset instead of turn off. After 3 days in rice, it won’t turn on at all even when plugged into power. I just want to know if there’s any way of getting photos, notes or anything else off my phone?

Are you able to take data of a phone which does not switch on? iPhone dropped in water, trying to see if I can recover any of the data on it. I am based in Reading, Berkshire.

i factory reseted my windows phone accidentally. can the photos be restored and how much that wil cost me

I took my phone out of my pocket today to find nearly all the apps had gone from the desktop (including those within folders). I can’t see if my photos and videos have gone too because my photo viewer has also gone, as well as the ‘files’ folder. New text messages aren’t showing up. If I go to app manager all the apps say 0.00kb. Worried I’ve lost my photos and videos.

Broken phone screen means no way of unlocking phone. Phone still turns on and is responsive in parts but unable to use it at all. Phone is an LG. Would be amazing if you could recover data especially photos as this happened on the last day of holiday!

Can not unlock my phone – Samsung galaxy S 19000 want my photos off it please.

I have a WD Passbook external SSD hard drive. 500gb. Recently this has stopped working. I connect it to my PC, the power light comes on but the PC does not recognise the external drive. I have tried different PCs and different leads to no avail. Is this something you may be able to help with?

My external hard drive is making very strange noises. I’ve just moved house so it probably has been dropped at some point. My laptop now will not even pick up that the drive is attached.

The USB-Hard drive port in the actual hard drive has disconnected whilst trying to remove the connecting wire.
I can no longer connect or access the device’s contents.
